2010 Scholarship Recipients

Jacobe Dijon Kemp

Jacobe is a graduate of Thurgood Marshall High School. He is determined to farther his education and becoming a successful person.  He was a member of the PALS, National Honor Society, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes; he also served on the Student Council as an Executive Board member.  He excelled in varsity basketball and football.  Jacobe will be attending Sam Houston State University where he plans to major in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sport Management.  His future goals are to manage a Recreational Center and eventually become an entrepreneur.

Derick Maduka-Okafor

Derick is a graduate of Hightower High School. He was a hard-working student with a great attitude and great work ethic.  Derick was actively actively involved student in school; he was member of the Student Council, PALS, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Mayor’s Youth Commission, National Society of High School Scholars, Fellow- ship of Christian Athletes, and the African Dance Troop. Derick will be attending the University of Houston where he plans to major in Biochemistry.   His future goals are to become a Cardiologist and return to his native homeland of Nigeria and build a hospital. Derick’s Quote:

Carlos E. Mavins

Carlos is a graduate of Willowridge High School.  He was taught the importance of earning a quality education since his early years as a primary student.  Throughout his high school career, he challenged himself by enrolling in a variety of honor and advanced placement courses.  Carlos was involved in many school activities; he led the renowned "Mighty Eagle Band" as a drum major for the past two years.  He was a valued member of the Principal Student Leadership Team, a member of the English Honor Society and the National Honor Society.  Carlos will be attending Texas A & M University where he plans to major in Engineering.  His future goals are to work for a major oil company and/or work in the entertainment business. Carlos' Quote:

Kelvin Davis

Kelvin is a graduate of Hightower High School.  He was a diligent student who manifest the characteristics that prove his ability, desire, and discipline to accept a leadership role and to achieve any goals that he set for himself.  Kelvin's extracurricular activities includes volunteering at Memorial Herman Hospital and Goodwill Industries and he is an active member in his church, Heavenly Star Baptist Church, youth ministries.  This fall, Kelvin will be attending Stephen F. Austin State University where he will major in Kinesiology/Sport Medicine.  His future goals are to get his Masters and open his own sport's facility. Kelvin's Quote:

college education that I will see the world  differently and have a wider view of understanding.”




Rashad Jevon Collier

Rashad is a graduate of Willowridge High School.  He credits his mother for instilling in him the importance of an education and he lives by the motto that – failure is not an option.  Rashad was actively involved in several school organizations to include being a member of the National Honor Society and the National English Honor Society.  He also was a proud member of the Mighty Eagle Marching Band where he served as an elite Drum Major. Rashad will be attending Stephen F. Austin State University where he plans to major in Biology/Chemistry and eventually become a Pharmacist. Rashad's Quote:

SinaAli Bana

SinaAli is a graduate of Hightower High School.  Born in Karachi, Pakistan and lived there for ten years prior to transitioning to the US, SinaAli saw how poverty and disease was rapid in his community.  That invoked in him a sense of passion to help better his community and the people who live within it.  SinaAli was an AP Scholar and was scholastically involved in many organizations to include being co-coordinator of Aga Khan Education Board Literature Desk, treasurer of Health Occupations Students of America, Business Leaders of America, and Youth Excelling in Service.  SinaAli will be attending the University of Texas at Austin where he will major in Pre-Med and Business.  His future goal is to be a Cardiologist/Neurologist.
